Safety and Early Return to Work

Safety Responsibility Instructions

While employers are responsible for providing a safe working environment and work place, within the work place employees have responsibilities for keeping themselves and others safe. It is no longer enough for employees just to follow the rules; they should feel that they are an integral part of the program, with a meaningful role in identifying potential safety problems and actually improving safety.  Adding a safety component to job descriptions is critical in this process.  Please contact your HR Department for guidance on agency-specific wording for this section.

An example would be:

Safety Responsibilities (see below):

1.  Comply with the Department’s Safety Program as outlined in its Workplace Safety Policy.
2.  Observe all safety rules and apply accident prevention principles while performing duties.
3.  Report all workplace accidents or injuries to the supervisor or designee.

A slightly different version for supervisory/management positions:

Safety Responsibilities (see below):

As a supervisory or management employee:

1.       Complies with the Department’s Safety Program as outlined in its Workplace Safety Policy.
2.       Observes all safety rules and applies accident prevention principles while performing duties.
3.       Reports all workplace accidents or injuries to the supervisor or designee.
4.       Maintain safe working conditions within area of supervision.
5.       Report all workplace accidents and injuries to the Human Resource Office within 24 hours.
